African Studies Center

The African Studies Center focuses and amplifies UNC's longstanding institutional commitment to Africa. Supported by vibrant Africa-focused faculty and students, the ASC fosters and advances North Carolina's deep and histori connections with the peoples of Africa. The African Studies Center:

  • Promotes scholarly engagement on Africa by sponsoring conferences, speakers, and workshops on a wide variety of topics including, but not limited to, political change, gender, globalization, health, and Islam.
  • Supports intermediate and advanced instruction in African languages.
  • Provides funding opportunities for faculty research in Africa.
  • Expands undergraduate curricular offerings in African Studies through course development awards.
  • Funds the acquisition of Africa materials for the UNC library system.
  • Educates K-12 teachers, professionals, and the general public about Africa.

The ASC has close ties to two UNC departments which offer opportunities for students interested in pursuing African studies: The Department of African and Afro-American Studies offers a major and minor in African Studies, and the Curriculum in International Studies offers a major in International Studies with a focus on Africa.
