The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Michigan (LACS) was founded as an undergraduate major in 1984. Since then, the Center has developed into one of the largest programs on Latin America and the Caribbean in the country, with over 80 faculty associates in a dozen schools and colleges at the University. Academically, LACS offers an undergraduate major and minor and a graduate certificate. It also serves as a local and regional clearinghouse for events and information on the Americas.
A constituent of the University of Michigan's International Institute since 1993 and a Department of Education National Resource Center since 2006, LACS advances knowledge about Latin America and the Caribbean and seeks to heighten interest in this region among members of the U-M Community and public. Through collaborative partnerships across the University, the Center fosters teaching and research in a wide range of disciplines.
