NRC Consortium for Trans-European Studies

The Upstate New York NRC Consortium for Trans-European Studies situates Cornell University's Institute for European Studies and Syracuse University's Center for European Studies for regional and national leadership in transnational and transcultural European studies. We train students, teachers, and public servants about the challenges of Europe's future and our interdisciplinary centers support teaching and research at all levels. We emphasize the less-known areas of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and Mediterranean Europe, instruction in less-commonly taught languages (LCTLs), and outreach to K-12 education, 142 upstate NY colleges and universities, the general public and policymakers.

Our mission is to reshape European studies emphasizing its transnational, trans-cultural dimensions such as immigration, religious diversity, transnational NGOs, national/cultural identity, inequality, European integration, post-communist studies. We develop new courses and interdisciplinary curriculum initiatives; support our libraries; advise students; fund their study, travel, and research; sponsor European scholars, seminars, conferences, and film series; support faculty re-training; hold workshops for teachers and public sector leaders; and maintain websites.
