Center for West European Studies

Introduction:

The UW Center for West European Studies (CWES), founded in 1994, is one of eleven federally funded National Resource Centers for European or West European Studies in the US. Our mission is to enhance the quality of teaching and research on West European politics, society, and culture through outreach to universities, business, the general public, and the K-12 community. Major outreach activities include academic conferences, educator workshops, an annual West Coast Model EU, EU Studies Summer Program in Brussels, co-sponsoring film festivals and community events, and regular public lectures by visiting European academics and officials. The center additionally supports new courses and curriculum development, West European language training at the University of Washington, and faculty professional development and research.

The Center for West European Studies was again selected in 2010 as a National Resource Center for a sixth grant cycle (2010-2013). The center is located in the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS), home to seven other Title VI centers, all of which work with CWES on the JSIS outreach team. The center works in tandem with the University of Washington's EU Center of Excellence, one of ten US outreach centers funded by the European Commission.
