IES Chile Health Studies - Summer
Chile - Santiago
Study Abroad Website
Designed for advanced Spanish students in pre-med studies, nursing, pharmacy, public health, hospital management, and other health related professions, the IES Santiago Health Studies Summer Program offers you the opportunity to enhance your classroom studies by spending the summer gaining practical and direct experience in Chile's community-centered public health care system. All students participate in guided observation of patient care. Through this practical experience in a Spanish-speaking environment, you will broaden your cultural understanding, gain an awareness of and respect for culturally-based health care practice and attitudes toward health, and develop proficiency in medical Spanish.
Program dates are generally as follows:
Summer - Late May to Late July
*Students will be in classes with other program participants. All courses are taught in Spanish.
THE ACADEMICS
Learn medical Spanish in a Spanish language course designed specifically for students in the Health Sciences and other health related fields and participate in a field study visit to rural Chile through a course in Anthropology and Indigenous Medicine.
THE LIFE
You will live in private homestays and will have all meals provided by your homestay family. All accommodations are screened and approved by the IES Abroad Santiago staff.
You are encouraged to bring laptops, provided they are insured. The IES Santiago Center offers wireless Internet access, but you should not expect to have Internet access in your homestays. IES provide computer facilities for you to complete your academic work, but facilities are not as extensive or as readily available as many U.S. institutions.
IES Santiago sponsors field trips in and around Santiago, including a day trip to Valparaiso, a major Chilean port. IES staff can also advise you on cultural events and activities in Santiago to help you learn more about Chilean culture.
