Global Service-Learning
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
In collaboration with APPLES, CGI is globalizing service learning at UNC through two classes. Latin America Immigrant Perspectives offers a global service learning experience to 12 undergraduates who learn about immigration to North Carolina and travel to migrant source communities in Mexico over Spring Break. In 2008, this class secured funding from an anonymous donor for a limited number of scholarships to subsidize students travel for this extraordinary experience. Intercultural Education in K-12 Classrooms studies issues such as dual language immersion programs, integrating new immigrants into the classroom, teaching international math, and globally focused professional development for teachers. The course enrolled the capped maximum of 14 students and contributed 573 hours of service while delivering 109 presentations to 4,047 children for the Carolina Navigators program.
