Russian, East European, and Eurasian Center
SEEL is a flourishing and growing presence within the UL. Its holdings, summarized in Table 5.A.1, total 739,369 titles relating to our area including ca.100,000 microforms and 4,000 periodicals, primarily in vernacular languages. Celebrated for its
coverage of Russian and Ukrainian history and culture, SEEL has complete runs of the chief 19th- and 20th-century Russian periodicals
and newspapers in microform or the original; near-complete collections of 17th- and 18th-century Russian books; and Russian book, periodical, and newspaper collections. Balkan and Central European periodicals and historical, literary, political, and philological sources from the 1800s to the present are well represented. Both the Balkans and Central Asia have been targeted acquisition areas in the past 2 years, while the Caucasus is a current priority. The Slavic collection consists of essential reference works, current print issues of 385 periodicals and 36 newspapers in Western and area languages, and 968 full-text vernacular language newspapers and journals available via subscription from SEEL work stations. Patrons enjoy access to highly qualified SRS staff who assist them in person, on-line, and in real-time chat sessions. Significant acquisitions since 2006 include selected titles from the Yudin collection, 4 Soviet/Russian microform sets, and subscriptions to ISI Emerging Markets and EastView Ukrainian Periodicals databases. These acquisitions have contributed to the collection's established emphases and reflect new programmatic directions (Caucasus, Eurasia).
