Alash performed at Cornell in February 2008. They are masters of Tuvan throat singing, a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. What distinguishes this gifted young group is the subtle infusion of modern influences into their traditional music.

Awaji Puppet Theater

Awaji Puppet Theater Company, designated an intangible Folk Asset by the Japanese Government, performed at Cornell University in February 2009. This event's intricate program highlighted the Awaji puppet's elaborate theater sets, costumes and props, and the highly refined mechanisms that manipulate the facial expressions of the puppets.

Chinese Brush Painting at Boces with Jim Hardesty

A Chinese brush painting workshop with Jim Hardesty was held at Boces in March 2006.

Chinese New Year Performance

Elementary school students celebrated the Chinese New Year with cultural performances such as lion dancing and Chinese yo-yo.

Crossing Musical Borders

Tim Hoffman's performance in March 2007 included a variety of pieces and genres from the Indian and Japanese repertoire. He performed vocal music and played the shakuhachi and koto. He was accompanied on the tabla by Debu Nayak.

Johnson Museum Celebrates Lunar New Year

A celebration for the Lunar New Year was held at the Johnson Museum in February 2007. Asian cultures were celebrated with performances, activities, and tastes.

Students from DeWitt Middle school and visiting students from a school on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona spent a day in October 2006 participating in arts from Asia and Europe.

Middle school students, including ESL students, were exposed to traditional Korean dance and music. They were taught basic drumming techniques and dance moves. They also watched a short performance of a shaman dance.

Presupposing Moves and their Rhetoric in Japanese: Charles Quinn

Charles Quinn, who teaches Japanese language, language pedagogy, and linguistics in the Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures at Ohio State University, gave a lecture about Japanese grammar at Cornell University in April 2009.

Teacher Professional Development Workshop: Buddhism

The Cornell East Asia Program and South Asia Program cosponsored a professional development workshop for K-12 teachers on teaching Buddhism on August 9 and 10, 2006 at Cornell University. The two day workshop, "A Teacher's Guide to Buddhism: India-Tibet-China," focused on the ideas that form the core of Buddhist thought and practice across South and East Asia.

The Spirit of Wild Horses: Chinese Brush Painting

A Chinese brush painting workshop with Master Painters Yi Hongbin & Jim Hardesty was held for the Cornell and Ithaca community in October 2005.

Traditional Japanese Sword Demonstration

The two most senior practicitoners of Yagyu Shinkage, a traditional Japanese sword school that has been in existence since the 1600s, demonstrated the school's form and techniques. The demonstration included bhato (the drawing and cutting with a sword) as well as its kata form (a choreographed sequence of techniques). A question and answer period followed the demonstration.

Cornell Educational Resources for International Studies (CERIS) offered workshops to internationalize the experiences of Cornell's Upward Bound 2009 students for the duration of the six week summer program. Each series focused on kinesthetic learning styles by emphasizing martial arts, musical performance, or dance.
